Hands up all you ladies of a certain age who blame their increasing girth on the slow-down of your metabolism after hitting the menopause!
We spend our lives searching for the most effective ways on how to increase metabolism in the sure and certain knowledge that, come the menopause, our body shape will change – and not for the better.
But is this really the case?
It’s certainly true that during the menstrual phase of younger women the metabolic rate rises by around 5%. This probably accounts for the monthly cycle carbohydrate cravings experienced by many women so it’s reasonably logical to assume that in the absence of a monthly cycle, the opposite is true.
Roughly 20 years ago, this theory was widely held but it seems that the leading scientific researcher who put forward this conclusion was actually prosecuted successfully some time later for fabricating his findings and was found guilty and jailed!
Today, the good news is that scientists will tell you that ladies do experience a dip in metabolic rate following their menopause. The bad news is, however, this drop is so small that it cannot account for any significant gain in body weight and is probably only equivalent to eating an extra biscuit a day.
So sorry girls – blaming your changing body shape on your changing hormones won’t wash. If you want to learn how to manage your weight as easily as possible you need to incorporate the tips on how to increase metabolism found on this website.
